About
Lisa Hülsmann is Professor of Ecosystem Analysis and Simulation at the University of Bayreuth. Her research combines ecological theory, data science, and statistical modelling to understand how ecosystems and biodiversity respond to a changing world.
Her work spans three broad themes: forest ecology and ecosystem dynamics under environmental change; the processes that shape biodiversity, species coexistence, and extinction; and the search for general ecological principles through the synthesis of data across systems and scales. By integrating large ecological datasets, field observations, and quantitative models, she seeks to better understand ecological patterns and processes and to improve our ability to anticipate future environmental change.
Lisa’s research is closely connected to the emerging field of ecological forecasting, which aims to make ecology more predictive and support evidence-based conservation and environmental management. In her teaching, she encourages students to combine ecological understanding with strong quantitative skills and reproducible research practices to tackle real-world environmental challenges.
