Lena Muffler-Weigel

About

Head of the Ecological Botanical Garden at the University of Bayreuth and a tree ecologist who aims to understand responses and adaptation potential of forest ecosystems to changing environmental conditions.

She studies trees from root to canopy across life stages to understand how the dynamics of growth and reproduction in forests respond to changing environmental conditions such as climate warming. There she works with diverse methodologies, from ecological experiments simulating climate change scenarios and field observations to the analysis of time series (e.g. dendroecology) to include a retrospective perspective on past climate changes on forest growth dynamics.

Her research motivation is to understand the opportunities and limitations of the adaptation potential of trees to climate change. In the larger view of maintaining the climate mitigation potential of forests and their climate change resilience in Central Europe’s temperate forests, the relationship with the public and the two-way transfer of knowledge with local stakeholders is important to her. In teaching, Lena Muffler-Weigel contributes to the Master modules Dendrology and Forest Ecology and Forest Growth Dynamics, where she teaches the application of tree-ring science in forest ecosystem research.
