Andreas Hotho

About

Andreas Hotho has been a professor at the University of Würzburg since 2009 and has held the Chair of Data Science since 2019. He is also the founding spokesperson of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS). He received a diploma in Business and Computer Science from TU Braunschweig (1998) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Karlsruhe (2004). Before joining Würzburg, he was a senior researcher at the University of Kassel.

Andreas Hotho develops machine learning and data science methods, with a focus on deep learning, knowledge integration and explainable artificial intelligence. His methodological work also encompasses natural language processing and the training of large language models. His research connects methodological advances with interdisciplinary applications, including ecological and climate research. Together with collaborators, he develops methods for improving climate model outputs, modelling air pollution and analysing environmental sensor data, including observations from smart beehives. Across these areas, his work explores how domain knowledge can support predictive modelling and make machine learning models more interpretable.
