Bert van der Veen

About

Bert van der Veen completed his PhD in Mathematical Sciences in 2022 at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, where his research centered on the development of statistical methodology and software for community ecology. He joined the University of Bayreuth in the end of 2025, where he teaches statistics on the M.Sc. programme in Ecological Forecasting.

Bert van der Veen researches multivariate statistical models for ecological communities, with a focus on generalised linear mixed models (GLMMs) and model-based ordination using Generalised Linear Latent Variable Models (GLLVMs), joint species distribution models, and approximate likelihood methods for scalable inference. He is a co-developer of the gllvm R package, and his work aims to bring everyday community ecology analysis closer to modern statistical standards, spanning ordination, diversity estimation, and the prediction of community composition more generally.
